    Managed Business Solutions (MBS), in partnership with the US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS), is seeking a temporary, full-time conservation social scientist to oversee human dimensions training and communications associated with the Human Dimensions (HD) Branch of the Natural Resource Program Center on-site in Fort Collins, CO. This program operates under the National Wildlife Refuge System. The HD Branch supports the FWS mission to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people by fostering social science understanding and capacity in the Refuge System headquarters, regional and field offices. This role is slated to begin as soon as possible - no third parties or agencies, please. 


    The successful candidate will support the Branch’s efforts by coordinating: (1) internal training opportunities, including seminars, webinars, and courses offered at the National Conservation Training Center and (2) the development and dissemination of technical guidance and informational resources, including a web-based resource portal and the Branch newsletter.


    Internal Support:

    • Participate in strategic planning for the Branch
    • Manage communication efforts of the Branch by contributing to and implementing the communication plan (scheduling, completion, dissemination)
    • Create and maintain an annual calendar for production and release of communications and training
    • Monitor and evaluate progress toward communication goals
    • Provide technical support for preparing submissions for each communication outlet
    • Proofread and edit writing submissions
    • Review, edit, and share podcasts and broadcasts effectively (includes adding closed captioning)
    • Support evaluation efforts through internal evaluation and reporting of Branch activities and by providing evaluation resources to other programs. 

    External Support:

    • Interview practitioners and other social scientists for podcasts and blogs
    • Develop quarterly HD Branch newsletter
    • Maintain web-based HD resource portal updates, resources, blog submissions, and expert directory
    • Develop popular articles highlighting HD Branch accomplishments and science applications
    • Produce basic graphic designs for newsletter
    • Develop a roster of contributors for each communication outlet
    • Design informational materials, such as fact sheets, that provide overview of topics related to Human Dimensions



    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required; advanced degree or professional experience preferred.
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including editorial skills
    • Experience identifying and targeting audiences
    • Strong ability to write and verbally present complex subjects in a clear and concise manner to varied audiences.
    • Experience in searching and synthesizing scientific literature, including journal articles.
    • Ability to keep abreast of new developments in the HD field, including news, events, jobs, etc.
    • Detailed knowledge of HD and environmental communication and evaluation concepts and approaches.
    • Ability to apply to multiple media, including podcasts, broadcasts, newsletters, and popular articles
    • Ability to effectively manage concurrent projects with minimal direct supervision.
    • Ability to manage workflow and make requests from the field
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
    • Proficiency in Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet, and other relevant software.


    • Quantitative and qualitative social science research experience
    • Graphic design
    • Video editing software (e.g., Camtasia)

    Writing samples will be requested from qualified candidates. 


    Interviews will be scheduled with the Human Dimensions Branch in conjunction with MBS. MBS, headquartered in Colorado, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sealaska Corporation and a global service provider of high-quality natural resource-based information technology solutions and is a current provider of services to the Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 


    Final candidates may be asked to create a writing assignment to determine best fit. The final candidate will be required to undergo a background check and drug screening.
