    Sealaska Timber is seeking a Sort Yard Quality Control Administrator. You will be responsible for supervision of log quality and value preservation through monitoring and controlling all phases of the sort yard, rafting, towing, and ship loading operations. Supervision of sort yard contract compliance and government regulations compliance. This position reports into the Sort Yard Quality Control Supervisor.


    • Establish and maintain good working relationship with contract sort yard management and personnel to ensure a mutual effort in producing maximum log quality and value. Observe machine operators so logs on rollouts are adequately spaced for accurate sorting and scaling and note any unnecessary damage to logs from equipment handling. Observe buckers/knot bumpers to ensure they are doing best job possible. Take necessary action to correct problems observed.    
    • Oversee grading and sorting of logs to obtain maximum value and consistent quality.
    • Maintain good bookkeeping and production inventory reporting to ensure accurate, up-to-date log accountability.  Also may be asked to forecast production for future shipments.  Accuracy and promptness are critical to the marketing staff.  
    • Prepare for and monitor ship loading.  This includes supervising rafting, towing, barging, and ship loading operations.  Good communication with STC QC/Marketing Departments, logging and towing contractors and loading superintendent are essential. 
    • Supervise contract compliance with regards to safety, environmental permits and STC policies.  Become familiar with contracts relevant to sort yard, rafting, towing, shiploading, and any other activity within supervision responsibility.  At all times, be sensitive to the environmental concerns within the working area.  Coordinate all phases of contract administration though contract compliance, QC/Marketing, and Engineering managers.
    • Show visiting customers inventory in rafts and in the sort yard; also show them all phases of sort yard process and answer questions as accurately as possible.
    • Keep records of rafting gear inventory and transfers thereof.  Report monthly to STC Transportation Manager.
    • Protect and maintain all STC on-site equipment (boats, float houses, vehicles, rafting gear, etc.) to ensure maximum longevity of these assets and present a good image to the customers.  Maintain an on-going inventory of equipment to help minimize loss, forecast future needs, and order new supplies well enough in advance.  Keep Sort Yard QC Supervisor and Marketing informed of any losses or damages that occur to STC property and assist in the repair or replacement of such property.
    • Keep Sort Yard QC Supervisor and Marketing well informed of any potential problems.  Maintain good working communications with corporations, contractors, clients, customers, and all STC departments.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    • Four (4) years log scaling and grading using Northwest Log Scaling and Grading rules.  Check scales and references required.
    • Must have good oral and written communications skills.
    • Minimum three (3) years of sort yard experience.
    • Minimum two (2) years of supervisory experience.
    • Some sawmill experience preferred.
    • Must be willing to travel by light aircraft
    • Must be willing to spend extended periods of time in remote sites.
